How to play the Megaminx online
-
Scramble the virtual Megaminx
Press Scramble to mix the puzzle with a 77-move sequence in the official competition format. The mixed position appears at once, and the move counter starts again from zero.
-
Turn faces with clicks or drags
Click a sticker to turn the face it sits on, right-click to turn it the other way, or drag a sticker in the direction it should travel. Dragging the empty background only changes your view.
-
Add the keyboard and buttons
U, F, L, R, B and D turn six faces from the keyboard, with Shift for the other direction. The 24 move buttons reach all twelve faces both ways, and Backspace undoes a turn.
-
Finish it or hand it over
Bring every face back to a single color and the page reports how many moves you needed. Lost along the way? Solve this state opens your exact position in the Megaminx solver.
A map of the twelve Megaminx faces
The simulator shows the Megaminx with white on top and green in front, and every face keeps its name and color whatever you do. Six faces have letter keys; the other six are turned with the move buttons or a click.
| Face | Where it sits | Color | Key |
|---|---|---|---|
| U | Top | White | U |
| F | Front of the upper half | Green | F |
| L | Left of the front face | Purple | L |
| R | Right of the front face | Red | R |
| BL | Back left of the upper half | Yellow | – |
| BR | Back right of the upper half | Dark blue | – |
| FL | Below the front face, left | Light blue | – |
| FR | Below the front face, right | Beige | – |
| DL | Lower half, left side | Orange | – |
| DR | Lower half, right side | Pink | – |
| B | Back of the lower half | Light green | B |
| D | Bottom | Gray | D |
Because the centers never change place, U always means the white face, however far you have spun the view.
Turning faces on the virtual Megaminx
A click is the quickest way to turn: click any sticker and the face it sits on turns a fifth of a turn, while a right-click turns that face the opposite way. For more control, press on a sticker and drag it in the direction it should travel; an edge sticker moves with two faces and a corner sticker with three, so the simulator turns whichever of those best follows your drag.
A key from the table turns its face clockwise, Shift reverses it and Backspace takes back the last turn. The Move buttons below the puzzle reach all twelve faces in both directions, 24 in total, and are the most precise option on a small screen. To see the far side, pull on the empty background or slide two fingers; spinning the view never turns a face.
How to scramble a Megaminx: R++, D— and U, the WCA way
Scramble mixes the puzzle with a sequence in the format official WCA Megaminx competitions use, generated in your browser by the open-source cubing.js library. Each scramble has 77 moves on seven rows: a row alternates R and D moves ten times, each one either ++ or —, and closes with U or U′. The puzzle jumps straight to the result, and the text is not displayed.
A printed competition scramble mixes a real puzzle the same way. Pick one face for the top and one for the front, and keep that hold for all 77 moves. R++ turns everything except the left face two fifths clockwise, as seen from the right; R— turns the same block back. D++ turns everything except the top face two fifths clockwise, as seen from below, and D— turns it the other way. At the end of each row, U turns the top face one fifth clockwise and U′ one fifth counter-clockwise.
Because R and D moves carry almost the whole puzzle at once, hold the face that stays still firmly and turn the rest in one smooth motion.
Inside the Megaminx: 12 faces, 50 moving pieces
The Megaminx is a dodecahedron, a ball of twelve pentagon faces. Each face has a center, five edge pieces and five corner pieces, which adds up to 20 corners and 30 edges, 50 moving pieces against the 20 of a 3x3. The 12 centers spin in place but always keep the same neighbors, so the color scheme never changes and gray always sits opposite white.
Every face turn is a fifth of a full turn, so five turns of one face bring it back where it started. A single turn carries 26 of the 132 stickers round: the 11 on the face itself and 15 on the ring of five faces around it. The other 106 stay where they are, so a turn on the far side of the puzzle leaves the part you have built untouched.
Practice routines when you play Megaminx online
Each turn lands in the history as a chip in Megaminx notation, such as BL′ or DR, and Moves shows how many there are. Undo walks back one turn at a time, all the way to the scrambled position if you like. When a scrambled Megaminx shows twelve single-colored faces again, a message such as “Solved in 214 moves!” appears, and with no clock on this page that number is the score to beat.
- The white star Scramble, then bring the five white edges around the white center in as few turns as you can, and try to beat the count next time.
- Watch one face From solved, turn a single face a few times and follow which pieces travel, then press Reset.
- Rewind instead of restarting When an insertion goes wrong, undo back to where it began and try the other direction.
Lost halfway? Send the virtual Megaminx to the solver
Solve this state opens the Megaminx solver with the position you are looking at already filled in, so there is nothing to paint. It returns a complete solution, usually around 150 turns, to replay in 3D, and its Play with this puzzle button brings the position back here. For a change of shape, the Pyraminx online simulator has four faces and far fewer pieces.
Megaminx simulator FAQ
What do you call a 4x4 Megaminx?
A Master Kilominx: four pieces along each edge and no fixed centers, like a 4x4 cube stretched over twelve faces. The family is named by size, from the two-layer Kilominx through the Megaminx and Master Kilominx to the Gigaminx, Teraminx and Petaminx. This site simulates only the standard three-layer Megaminx.
What is a Megaminx?
A Megaminx is a twisty puzzle shaped like a dodecahedron, with twelve pentagon faces in twelve colors. It works like a Rubik's cube with more sides: each face turns in fifths, carrying its edges and corners along, and the goal is to bring every face back to a single color. Its beginner method builds on 3x3 ideas.
Can I play Megaminx online for free?
Yes. The Megaminx simulator is free, with no download, no account and no limit on how many scrambles you play. It runs in the browser of a computer, tablet or phone, and the competition-style scramble, undo, all 24 move buttons and the hand-off to the Megaminx solver are included.
Is the Megaminx an official competition puzzle?
Yes. The Megaminx is one of the 17 events of the World Cube Association, solved at competitions around the world with the 77-move scrambles this simulator also uses. Competitors usually solve it with methods adapted from the 3x3, finishing with a last layer much like a cube's.
Why are some Megaminx colors so similar?
Twelve faces need twelve colors, and there are not twelve clearly different ones. The standard scheme pairs look-alike shades on opposite faces, such as white and gray or green and light green, because opposite faces never share a piece. Two neighboring faces are always easy to tell apart.
Is there a timer for the Megaminx?
This page has no clock; the move counter and the solved message are its score, and turns you undo are not counted. The site's separate cube timer handles only the 3x3 and 2x2, so time a real Megaminx with any stopwatch and use this simulator for practice.
